A Cry For Help From Techno-Goober

Okay. I need help. I might change my blog home. Maybe. I like Bravenet because it is very user friendly. Even a tech goober like me can get around easily here. But I'm looking to upgrade a bit without enormous cost. I know a lot of people use blogger.com. I have a blog there simply so I can comment to certain other blogs. I thought maybe I'd take up permanent residance there. But I just spent way too long trying to navigate that site. I sort of figured out how to post pics, but that's it. Couldn't figure out how to do the profile pic or how to change fonts or how to add a link side bar.... Too. Complicated.

I've heard people mentioning Word Press. If I used that program, would I be able incorporate my blog into my website. You know so that it has the same look? Advice? Anyone? Heeeeeeeelp!

Meanwhile I've been working on taxes all evening. Almost as fun as trying to figure out BlogSpot. Ugh.

I have Wordpress and love it. But whether it'll work with your website depends on whether your, um... host (That's the word! Couldn't think of the word *rolling eyes*) is set up for it. Sheesh. I should probably let somebody else explain it. I know just enough to be really dangerous.

I use SquareSpace and am fairly happy with it, although I've heard good things about Wordpress too.

I love the way your blog looks, Tori. That's wrod press, eh? Okay. So I need to see if my website host allows me to use it. The next step. Think I'll rely on hubby or that.

Jamie, your blog is very classy looking. Did the blog site provide the header picture or did you import that? Never heard of Square Space. I'll check into it. Thanks!

Thanks Beth. Squarespace has a lot of basic shells to build on. I took the simplest and added a few shiny bits––like the header. I know very basic, stone-age HTML, but it’s enough to tweak a few things here and there.

Shannon Stacey and Alison Kent use WordPress, I believe. It's good, but not necessarily for the techno-goober, I understand. One of the key advantages is that it's 'easy to update' but only if you're html happy, I think.

To change the way a blogger blog looks you have to amend the template. Which I can only do if someone e-mails me the right code and instructions!

But yes, please get out of Bravenet. Slow-loading and somehow fussy.

Blogger is could, and very customizable, but it takes a little html knowledge. There are also people on the 'net who'll make up a custom template for you for minimal money.

As long as you have available MySQL databases through your webhost, you can use WordPress. I use WordPress for my blog, and I love it. The one downside (for me at least) was getting my custom theme built. I'm not HTML dummy, but it took a lot of hair-pulling frustration, cut n' paste, and trial and error to finally get my blog looking like it does.

A huge upside, though, is that I can type up my post and schedule it to post at a later date and time. So I often write my entries at night, and schedule them to post first thing in the am.

WordPress.org has some fabulous support forums, too. And their own Wiki. If you're thinking about trying it, I would suggest going out there and doing some reading.

Ugh. That first sentence was supposed to read "Blogger is *good*."

I need to go back to bed.

Wow. I really appreciate everyone's input. Lynn, I AM an HTML dummy. So it seems that know matter where I go (outside) of Bravenet, I'll need to buckle down and do some studying. I can feel the grey hairs sprouting. Your blog looks fantastic. The hard work paid off. Congrats!

Steve said he'd look into the Word Press thing for me. Meanwhile, I'll try my hand at blogger again and also look into Square Space (Thanks, Jamie!) Anna, thanks for mention Alison Kent. It reminded me that she does a lot of web work. She did HelenKay's blog--awesome theme. If I bomb on my own, maybe I'll do as Lynn suggested and seek out that custom-made template. Dang me and my techon-challenged brain!

Hi Beth. I use the blogspot, as you know, and it's true it does require "caveman" HTML knowledge (thanks for that distinction, Jamie), specifically that you know how to make write out your links. Once your template is set up as you like it, keeping the links updated is not too hard, and I've even found that positioning the pictures is easy now, too. If you want to be involved with the total look of the page, though, that's another story and would require evolution to at least the Bronze Age, imo. I kind of am used to your board's looks and find that comforting. The top part takes up a bit more room than I'd like, at least in my Firefox and IE browsers, with the avatar above the book ad, but that avatar's so cute, she's gotta stay somewhere.

I have to say, I'm a major fan of Bravenet. I've had blogs all over (and I do mean it-- about 8 of them), and I like Bravenet the best; probably because it is so user-friendly and highly customizable.

Xanga is also fairly easy to navigate and you can definitely do a lot with it (although I never figured out too many of its features ). I think I'll stick with Bravenet! But keep us posted if anything changes!

Thanks, Beth!

I think I probably should have added that a quick web search will actually bring up multitudes of pre-made layouts for Blogger and for WordPress. And some of them are even attractive.

If you want, I'd be happy to dig up some links for you. *g*
